3D Printing Industry, a reference media in additive manufacturing, publishes an article on EXOSKYN, the 3D-printed sneaker concept developed in collaboration with KORUX. This publication adds to those in Yanko Design, 3D Print and Trendhunter, confirming the sector’s interest in an approach that articulates generative design, bio-inspired structure and direct manufacturing.
EXOSKYN is not a formal variation on the existing sneaker. It explores a systemic alternative: the shoe designed as an interface between body, material and code.
EXOSKYN × KORUX: Context of the Collaboration
EXOSKYN was developed for KORUX, a company specialized in the applications of additive manufacturing to wearable objects. This collaboration is not subcontracting where the designer provides forms and the manufacturer produces them. It is co-development: the constraints of additive manufacturing structure the design from the beginning. The form does not precede the process. It emerges from the dialogue between design intent and manufacturing capability.
Generative Design: What It Changes
Generative design is not a stylistic tool. It is a method of form optimization under constraints. You define objectives (minimize weight, maximize stiffness in certain directions, maintain flexibility in others) and constraints (material available, manufacturing process, cost), and an algorithm generates structures that satisfy these parameters.
Applied to the sneaker, generative design produces structures impossible to design manually: irregular lattice networks, gradient density zones, ribs distributed according to the actual load paths of the foot. These structures are not decorative. They are functional responses to biomechanical requirements.
Bio-Inspired Structure: Learning from Natural Systems
Natural systems have solved the problem of the foot-ground interface for millions of years. Bones, tendons, ligaments, plantar fascia: an extraordinarily efficient system, lightweight, durable, adaptive. EXOSKYN observes this system — not to copy it, but to understand its structural principles and translate them into a manufacturable design language.
