Azwan Souiri: Thuja Burl ‘Liquid Fire’ — When Material Becomes the Signature of Space
SHARE:
Limited Edition 2026-2027 — 30 Pieces
A block like this one is born once every five or six years. 28 kg of thuja root burl, “liquid fire” grade. This is not a marketing formula. It is a technical description of an optical phenomenon that only this wood produces. The rarity is not constructed. It is structural.
Azwan Souiri is a nascent house that works with this material to produce functional objects for high-end projects: hospitality, residential, corporate. No decorative craft. No folklore. Unprecedented applications where thuja is not a veneer, but the material signature of the space.
Thuja “Liquid Fire”: Anatomy of an Exception
38 to 42 eyes per cm². This density is measurable. It is not subjective. An eye is a dark inclusion in the wood fiber, produced by anarchic root growth. The higher the density, the more prized the material. Beyond 40 eyes/cm², you enter the “liquid fire” grade. Less than 1% of thuja burl blocks reach this threshold.
Once opened and polished with heated argan oil, the block reveals an optical depth of 18 to 22 millimeters. Concretely, this means that light penetrates the material nearly two centimeters before being reflected. The eyes — those dark inclusions — capture light, deflect it, re-emit it at high speed. Hence the name: liquid fire.
No other wood on Earth offers this intensity. Olive can produce burls. Walnut too. Ash, sometimes. But none combines eye density, optical depth and chromatic saturation at this level. Moroccan thuja is an extreme case. It occupies a singular position in the global hierarchy of precious woods.
This exception is not accidental. It results from extreme climatic conditions: aridity, brutal thermal variations, poor soils. The tree grows slowly, permanently stressed. This stress produces disorganized root outgrowths — the burls — whose anarchic cellular structure generates this eye density. The more intense the stress, the denser the burl. The denser the burl, the more powerful the optical effect.
The “liquid fire” grade only exists in Morocco. It is found nowhere else. This is not a matter of know-how. It is a matter of terroir.
The Argan Oil Polishing Process
The block is polished with heated argan oil. This technique is ancestral. Argan oil, heated between 60 and 80°C, penetrates deeply into the fibers. It saturates the material, reveals the eyes, amplifies the optical depth. Unlike varnish — which forms an impermeable surface film — the oil impregnates. It does not mask. It reveals.
This difference is fundamental. An industrial varnish gives immediate surface gloss, but it seals the pores, freezes the material, prevents any evolution. Oil, on the other hand, lets the wood breathe. It allows the wood to continue living, developing a patina, adjusting to hygrometric variations. The visual result is deeper, less brilliant, more organic.
Azwan Souiri: Positioning and Unprecedented Application
Azwan Souiri is not a craft brand. Not a gallery. Not a showroom. It is a creation house that works with local artisans to produce functional objects for precise professional contexts.
The application we are developing is unprecedented. It exists nowhere else. It reproduces no existing standard. It was designed to meet a specific technical constraint. The object is functional. It does not decorate. It operates. It integrates into projects where the material must become the signature of the space — hotel lobbies, high-end residential reception areas, corporate spaces where every material choice is a statement.
Strictly Limited Edition: Organized Rarity
Total quantity available 2026-2027 in this grade: less than 180 kg. This figure is not negotiable. It results from three years of prospecting, excavation, and block opening. From the 180 kg, a portion is lost during cutting (offcuts, cracks, non-usable areas). Another portion is reserved for tests, prototypes, technical adjustments. What remains allows the production of 30 pieces. No more.
Strictly limited to 30 pieces. Not 31. Not 50 if demand is strong. 30. This limit is not marketing. It is imposed by the quantity of available material.
The rarity here is not artificial. It is not a premium positioning strategy. It is structural. It results directly from material availability. The “liquid fire” grade is rare because it appears rarely. Full stop.
